The first section of the book is devoted to the trails of the Cabinet Mountains Wilderness, the 35-mile-long wilderness area established in 1964. The second section covers trails in the western, mostly Idaho, portion of the range – closest to Sandpoint – while the third section details trails of the southern range that stretches west of Montana’s Flathead Lake.

Nicholls also provides an absorbing natural history for the range, along with several essays drawn from his own adventures wandering the Cabinets.
