Dr. Carus died, leaving 3 children and a hidden fortune. The children, James Carus, Andora and Agatha Shoop were wastrels. Not wanting the three to have the bulk of his wealth, he spent most of his money on something very expensive and hid it on his estate at Addington Hills. This was a game with few clues. If the 3 could find it within 15 days, it would be theirs. If not, the fortune would go to an orphanage. Time was running out, so in desperation they engaged Sherlock Holmes to find the treasure.
