Presents traditional music found in the Southern appalachian region during the last decades. Many of the songs included were notes directly from the singing of young people whose home life has been spent in these hills. The modal structure of the melodies indicates their antiquity. Since modal scales were in common use centuries before a system of harmony (chords) was devised, these melodies are complete within themselves and need little harmonic accompaniment. If harmony is used, it should follow the notes of the melody as closely as possible and maintain classic simplicity. The terse unadorned poetry of the ballads discloses their ancient folk origin more clearly than could a sheaf of arguments.
