Things we associate with the body are often created or controlled by the brain. Pain, for example, is a direct result of the brainâ€™s chemical reaction to trauma. While the nerves can feel the pain, it is the brain that creates the pain in the first place. Thus, someone who has a stronger sense of control over their mind can in fact affect such things as pain, hunger, and any number of other physical conditions. This is hardly surprising, however, as the axiom â€˜mind over matterâ€™ is one that is used universally, regardless of language or culture.

Understanding that the brain, and thus the mind, can create and control physiological symptoms does not mean that these symptoms will cease to exist. On the contrary, just because you know that the brain tells you that youâ€™re hungry doesnâ€™t mean you wonâ€™t get hungry just like anyone else. The fact of the matter is that your brain will keep doing its job, regardless of the fact that you know what it is doing. The important thing to take from this knowledge is that you can create the mental toughness to resist the feelings of pain and hunger that dictate the actions of other people. In other words, once you understand that hunger is the brain telling you to eat you can tell your brain to shut up and keep going. The feelings of hunger may not go away, but your ability to ignore them is the key. Mental toughness is the ability to rise above the basic needs and wants of your body and to be able to stay in control, no matter what your body says.
