Return to the Desert: A Journey from Mount Hermon to Mount Sinai
In the autumn of 1993, David Praill made a journey from Mount Hermon to Mount Sinai - the length of the Holy Land. As well as raising money for the hospice of which he is manager, he was fulfilling a dream to return to the desert - for him, a place of unparalled beauty and adventure. His 40 day walk and camel ride took him alongside the Jordan into Galilee, on to Jericho and Jerusalem, the length of the Dead Sea and through the Aravah desert to the resort of Eilat, covering over 100 miles. The author records the events of his journey on a daily basis and is full of stories about the landmarks and history of the region from Old Testament times to the political turmoil of the present day. At the same time the author, and Anglican clergyman disenchanted with the forms of his religion, discovers new spiritual insight in an ancient tradition: the silence and solitude of the desert.
