â€ƒLate in his career, iconic modern artist Henri Matisse began to explore creative cut-paper collages as an alternative to brushwork, a technique he called "painting with scissors". Often large in scale, these gouaches decoupes enabled Matisse to bring his eye for color and geometry to an all-new medium. The experiment reached its fullest flower with the publication of Jazz in 1947.
