I know how frustrating it can be to find that perfect monologue. The one you can connect to, make your mark with, but also one that people haven't heard a million times already.
I know actors are sometimes afraid to use something from a monologue book because most of them are quite...well let's face it, they usually aren't very good. On top of that, there is no background story attached so you don't know have any information.
But here is a book of monologues for both men and women that are meaty, original and powerful. I wrote these from the heart. And yes, they have a brief background description, but I invite you to create your own back story for them (we need to do that as actors anyway).
I originally began writing monologues for myself to perform. As I continued to write more and more, I discovered that monologues are really just these hidden rants and bottled thoughts in all of us that are just dying to come out. I began to view other people and wonder what they are really thinking. If they could stop whatever they are doing right at this moment and let out what was really going on in their head, what would they want to say? Who would they want to say it to? What message would they want to get across?
So this inspired me to expand and write for both men and women, all ages, all ethnicities, etc. Human thoughts and behaviors are more connected than all of us realize. I don't think fears, concerns, and messages are limited to being just a woman thing or a man thing. A black or white thing. Of course, some of them are individual, but some of them are universal.
That is why I didn't want to label each monologue. I think they can be performed by whomever it speaks to. That is the most important part.
