Â Â Â I shook my head. Lady lawyer was a phrase Iâ€™d be happy to go the rest of my life and never hear again.
Â Â Â â€œYou do wonder why sheâ€™d be lawyer-shopping in an executive suite. Does it bother you that she seems to have chosen you because she thought youâ€™d be a lightweight?â€
Â Â Â â€œNot at all. Iâ€™m a blonde female just a few months over thirty-one. I get that kind of thing all the time.â€

Her love life
I tore open the protein bar. It was a bit melted from Paulâ€™s body heat, but I took a bite and chewed. â€œMessy, but delicious,â€ I said with my mouth full.
Â Â Â â€œDo you always carry protein bars?â€ Brooke asked Paul.
Â Â Â â€œOne of the benefits of having a fat boyfriend,â€ I said, chewing.
Â Â Â â€œOuch,â€ Brooke said. â€œShe called you fat.â€

Â Â Â â€œSo she did.â€ They both looked at me.

Her family life
My puppy and I spent Christmas in Charlottesville with my mother and my brother and his family. My father, long estranged from the family after leaving my mother for his veterinary assistant, showed up for lunch, bringing presents. Nobody told me he was coming, and his expression was cautious when he spoke to meâ€”or even looked at me.

Â Â Â â€œSaid the scary bitch in her most belligerent voice,â€ my brother said.
Â Â Â â€œYouâ€™re not helping,â€ I said.
Â Â Â â€œSorry.â€ Though he didnâ€™t look it.

Her professional life
Paul said, â€œI understand the case changed on you this week.â€
Â Â Â I exhaled. â€œYes, it did that.â€
Â Â Â And it wasnâ€™t even your fault,â€ Paul said.
Â Â Â â€œWhat do you mean by that?â€
Â Â Â â€œWell, to be fair, all your cases tend to thunder along like a pack of greyhounds.â€
Â Â Â I rolled my eyes.
Â Â Â â€œJust tell us the story,â€ Paul said. â€œStart from the beginning, right where this exquisitely beautiful woman walks into your office.â€
Â Â Â My eyes slid to Brooke, who evidently had been talking.
Â Â Â â€œDescribe her body in as much detail as youâ€™d like,â€ Paul said. â€œI donâ€™t mind. Start with her slim, silky legs, and work your way up.â€
